Whirring During
by Charles Rice Goff III
In late 1982, Charles Rice Goff III released to the public a collection of poetry, published in a paper-back libretto entitled: "Whirring During." The volume was typeset and printed in Oakland, California, by Poetry X-Press. In 2010, Goff used computer technology to create a revised edition of "Whirring During." This archive contains two PDF files of the revised edition: one formatted for online reading, and one formatted for printing out and assembling into a hard-copy libretto. Printing the pages of the "print edition" back-to-back in the order that they appear (page one backed by page two, page three backed by page four, etc.) and folding them together in half will produce a hard-copy of the booklet.
"Whirring During" contains 28 poems authored by Goff during the early 1980's, accompanied by 28 of Goff's original sketches. The original edition contained fewer sketches, so to maintain continuity in his updated volume, Goff chose the additional drawings for the revised edition from his collection of original sketches that he drew during the early 1980's. Also, because some of the spellings and arrangements of lines in the poems of the 1982 edition suffered from poor proofreading, the 2010 edition of "Whirring During" presents all of its verbiage in the manner that Goff had originally intended.
The poems of "Whirring During" examine philosophy, romance, culture, politics, and the act of writing itself. Goff uses a full pallet of word play to paint pictures of his thoughts. He describes his approach to writing poetry thus:
"Each poem is a unique communicative endeavor; it's style is organic to itself. The form that a poem takes is part of its communicative quality. In the same way that every message contains its own information, every poem contains its own individual framework to help convey that unique information."
Several of the poems published in "Whirring During" have also served as lyrics to Goff's experimental audio compositions. Among the volumes of recordings which incorporate lyrics from this booklet are:

Goff acquired two Bachelor of Arts degrees in writing (Creative Writing / Journalism) from the University of California at Berkeley in 1980. He has published a wide variety of written works, audio recordings, graphic images, videos, etc. He is the founder of Taped Rugs Productions.
